SAMARCH: SAlmonid MAnagement Round the Channel (2017-2022)

Funding: European Interreg program France

Leader in France: NEVOUX Marie (INRA)

Summary: SAMARCH is a cross border project with 10 partner organisations, 5 in France and 5 in the UK. This project will study Atlantic salmon and sea trout on 5 rivers across the south of England and northern France, relying on historical fish samples stored in the French BDEI collection.

A project with several actions dedicated to one main objective: move foreward management policies

-use DNA analysis to map habitat that are important for sea trout in the Channel

-provide new information to improve the tools used by the regulatory bodies in England and France to manage their salmon stocks

-provide novel information on the long term changes in the growth rates of salmon using historical salmon scale collections

-improve our understanding of difference in the salmon life cycle between male and females (genetic sexing from scale samples), which is essential to better manage salmon populations
